Refurbishment of Lisburn Railway Station

Gavin Bamford made this Freedom of Information request to Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company

The request was successful.

From: Gavin Bamford

19 August 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

During the recent refurbishment of Lisburn Railway Station, what
consideration was given to the retention of the original granite
sets at the edge of each platform?

It is noted that Platform 1 retained the valuable, probably
original granite sets at the platform edge. However, I note that
the the ones from platforms 2 & 3 have been replaced by modern
concrete ones.

What became of the original stones? Were they retained for future
use by NIR or given to the Heritage Service?

I am concerned and find this extremely worrying considering that
Lisburn Railway Station is in a Heritage area i.e.: Lisburn
Historic Quarter. It is also a Grade 2 listed building.

Yours faithfully,

Gavin Bamford

Dear Mr. Bamford,

Further to my acknowledging e-mail of 21 August, I am now in a position
to respond more fully to your request for information.

Prior to works commencing at Lisburn, consultation with the Environment
& Heritage Service was undertaken to agree the scope and extent of the
proposed works throughout the station.

With specific regard to the coper works, each platform was reviewed by
Translink and their Consultant before works commenced: -

Platform 3 consisted of flat concrete copers for its entire length,
except for a 5-10 metre section with deeper concrete copers. Likewise,
Platform 2 consisted of deeper concrete copers for the majority of its
length which were the same size as the original granite setts, along
with more modern copers over the remaining lengths of platform.

Platform 1 consisted of mainly original granite setts, albeit with a
number replaced by concrete copers, similar to those on Platform 2.

The decision was therefore taken to retain the original granite setts on
Platform 1, whilst the concrete copers on Platforms 2 and 3 would be
replaced.

This approach ensured that the historic setts on Platform 1 were
retained whilst the copers on Platforms 2 and 3 could be replaced to
meet the track gauge requirements, improve platform stepping distance,
remove slip/trip hazards and install tactile paving in accordance with
Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) legislation. The concrete copers
that were removed had no historic or monetary value and were not
retained.

Similar coper works were carried out at some other locations on our
network as part of our DDA works programme. As a result, a small number
of granite setts have been salvaged and were used to replace missing
granite setts on Platform 1 at Lisburn, with the remainder stored prior
to return to Translink. This will facilitate the like-for-like
replacement of the granite setts on Platform 1 at Lisburn at a later
date, should any become damaged.

I trust the foregoing deals with the various queries which you raised.
If you are not satisfied with this reply you may complain to the
Translink Marketing Executive, who has overall responsibility for
Freedom of Information issues within Translink or the Director of
Corporate Affairs, who has such responsibility within the Northern
Ireland Transport Holding Company.

If we are then unable to resolve any complaint that you may have, you
may refer the matter to the Information Commissioner who will make an
independent judgement. The address of the Information Commissioner is:
Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AT. The address of
the Information Commissioner's Office for Northern Ireland is: 51
Adelaide Street, Belfast, BT2 8FE.

Yours sincerely,
