Procurement policy to promote equality and diversity

D Bird made this Freedom of Information request to Dover District Council

The request was successful.

From: D Bird

4 January 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Given Vera Baird's recent guidance for the public sector on using
procurement to advance equality issues while gaining value for
money, I would like to request information about Dover District
Council's procurement policy. Specifically, I would like to know
what steps the authority plans to take at a strategic level to
ensure that its procurement policy helps it to promote equality and
diversity within the local community. Has Vera Baird's guidance
been discussed either formally or informally amongst either members
or officers? What records are held of such discussions?

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Yours faithfully,

D Bird

Dear D Bird

I am writing in respect of your enquiry for information held by this
Authority received on 5 January 2009 and to confirm that we have
completed the search for the information that you requested.

The Council does have a well defined Equality Scheme and this is
supported by a sound process which involves staff, members, partners and
customers from across the district working together to promote Equality.
The Council's procurement procedures fully support the equality agenda
and new guidance has recently been issued to ensure that our suppliers
adhere to our equality policy. This process is administered and
monitored by the Procurement section, and supports our overall
Equalities agenda, which is itself monitored by our Equality Group.

The council is not aware of any guidance directly produced by Vera
Baird, but it is aware of Angela Eagle's document called "Making
Equality count" and this guidance is being used to inform the
development of our new procurement strategy.
