Following your request for information of 14 August 2009, and our
acknowledgement of 17 August, the City of London (CoL) responds as
follows.

In the City, the "square mile", the CoL allows taxis, which does not
include private hire vehicles, to enter and proceed in a few of the bus
lanes.

"Taxi" is defined in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions
2002 (S.I.2002/3113) -

(a) in England and Wales, a vehicles licensed under-
(i) section 37 of the Town Police Clauses Act 1847; or
(ii) section 6 of the Metropolitan Public Carriage Act1869"

Here is the definition of Private Hire Vehicle from the Department of
Transport web site:

Private hire vehicle is defined in section 80 of the Local Government
(Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 as "a motor vehicle constructed or
adapted to seat fewer than nine passengers, other than a hackney carriage
or public service vehicle or a London cab or a tramcar, which is provided
for hire with the services of a driver for the purpose of carrying
passengers".

Please find attached a copy of a Traffic Order detailing all the bus lanes
in the City. Schedule 1 of the Traffic Management Order states what types
of vehicles are permitted in the bus lanes.

Please note that the CoL is the Local Authority for the "square mile", ie
the historic City of London, and not London as a whole, which is covered
by over 30 boroughs and the Westminster City Council. Please see the
following link to a map on the CoL's website, which shows the area
covered: [1]www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/maps/boundary_map.htm.

The FOIA applies to the CoL as a local authority, police authority and
port health authority. If you wish to make a complaint about the way the
CoL has managed your request please make your complaint in writing to
email address: [email address]. For a link to the CoL's FOI
complaints procedure, please visit the following page:
