From: FOI
University of Birmingham
23 July 2009
Dear Mr Richardson
In your request for information dated 11 July 2009, which was received on 13 July 2009, you asked for the total amount received by the purchase of printer credit at the University of Birmingham in the academic years 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09. You also asked for the number of printer credits purchased during these academic years.
The University wrote asking you to confirm that your enquiry was in relation to students' use of printer facilities and you confirmed that it was.
The University's IT Services provides printing and photocopying facilities not only in the University's main library but also in clusters around the campus. The location of these facilities can be found at: http://www.clusters.bham.ac.uk/PrintLoca... .
Students add credit to their student ID card via "Autoloaders"; this is often for small amounts eg £1-2, although this figure may be less. There are approximately 100 printers and copiers available for student printing across the campus.
Information on "IT Services Charged Printing & Photocopying" can be found at: http://www.clusters.bham.ac.uk/printing.... . Students are encouraged to print "duplex" (double sided) as the cost is the same whether printing single or double sided. Any income received by the University must cover the cost of machine rental, the purchase of paper and many other overheads.
The table below shows the number of prints and the amount of income received for the academic years specified in your request. Unfortunately it is not possible to distinguish between student, staff and visitor printing, although it should be noted that staff and visitor printing will be minimal.
Academic year
Number of prints
Income
2006/07
6,145,442
£307,272.10 this figure is calculated from the number of prints
2007/08
5,617,942
£280,897.12
2008/09
5,355,329
£267,766.48 (to date, the year end is 31 July 2009)
The University is not able to provide a figure for the number of times ID cards have had credit added to them. It should also be noted that if a print/copy run fails, the student will receive a refund of credit expended, however it is not possible to distinguish this credit added to a card from the original credit applied by the student.
If you are unhappy with the manner in which your request has been dealt with, you may ask for an internal review. A copy of the Complaints and Appeals procedure can be found at: http://www.legalservices.bham.ac.uk/foi/... . If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have a right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision.
If you have any queries with regard to this letter, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely

Dear FOI,
Thank you for the swift and informative response. I would like to
ask two things to clarify the reply you sent:
1) Are the figures you have sent for printing alone (from a
printer), or from both printers and photocopiers? In your response
you state about printing and photocopying. I was a little bit
confused by the answer, whether it refers to solely printing or
both printing and photocopying.
2) Would it be possible to have the final figure for this academic
year once the 31st July 2009 is passed, or would I have to submit a
new FOI?
Many Thanks,
Yours sincerely,
Adam Richardson

Dear Mr Richardson
1. The figure is for both printing and photocopying.
2. The data for 2008/09 can be forwarded to you after the year end. We will forward this information once it becomes available.
