PricewaterhouseCoopers evaluation of NWDA economic return

Julian Todd made this Freedom of Information request to Northwest Regional Development Agency

The request was successful.

From: Julian Todd

16 October 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

In the "Making Big Things Happen - The Economic Impact of the NWDA
1999-2009" publication currently hosted on the front page of the
Northwest Regional Development Agency website, it states:

"""
An independent assessment* of Agency performance between 2002-07
showed that every £1 invested in the regional economy averaged a
return of £5.20 in economic impact.

Source: independent evaluation by PricewaterhouseCoopers on behalf
of BERR 2008-09
"""

I have searched the NWDA website briefly and cannot find any other
references to this assessment.

Please can I be pointed to, or be sent a copy of, this
PricewaterhouseCoopers assessment/evaluation?

Yours faithfully,

Julian Todd

Dear Sharon Doran,

Thank you for your very prompt reply.

I can find the two volumes of the PricewaterhouseCoopers report
under the link.

http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/regional...

The introduction says: "if allowance is made for the expected
persistence of these benefits, then every £1 of RDA spend will add
£4.50 to regional GVA."

I am unable to find the £5.20 figure cited in the NWDA report
listed anywhere. The regional chapters in the report seem to leave
the figures averaged across intervention type ("regeneration
through physical infrastructure", "people and skills", etc) and not
across the whole RDA.

Can you describe more precisely where this number was obtained
from?

Yours sincerely,

Julian Todd
