Dear Sir or Madam,
Freedom of Information request
I am the Freedom of Information compliance officer for the Environment
Directorate and I am writing in response to your request for information
from Somerset County Council under the provisions of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000, where you asked:
'i) What is the Council's policy with regard to tackling the problem of
speeding in and around Cheddar Gorge?
ii) What actions have been taken to reduce speeding in the last 3 years?'
The Gorge includes a section from Cheddar Town centre approximately 750 m
in length that is governed by a 30 mph speed limit. The remainder of the
Gorge is governed by the National Speed Limit up onto the Mendip Hills.
30 MPH section
1 The alignment of the carriageway, its width and the
parking/pedestrian movements in this area generally restrict the speed of
traffic to within the 30 mph speed limit. Signing and road markings have
been implemented where they are considered necessary to highlight any
problem locations.
2 The enforcement of speed limits generally is the responsibility of
the Police. The Road Safety Partnership only operate (using cameras) if
injury collision data shows that this appropriate. Our local Engineers are
working with the Police over enforcement in this section of the Gorge. We
are continually monitoring personal injury collision data and the
causation factors of these collisions. Action may be taken where
appropriate.
National Speed limit section
I The alignment and bends within the gorge clearly indicate to
drivers the need to drive carefully. The whole of the Gorge is a Site of
Special Scientific interest ( SSSI )and of world importance. We have
considered a speed limit but excessive signing, including speed limit
signing, would seriously affect the very nature of the Gorge.
2 Recently, through our Local Safety Schemes, we have upgraded the
signs (particularly in the upper section of the gorge) and made them more
conspicuous to draw the attention of drivers to the alignment of the
carriageway. This will be followed by long-term analysis. We are
continually monitoring personal injury collision data and the causation
factors of these collisions and action may be taken where appropriate. As
with the other section, the Police are responsible for enforcement of the
National Speed limit.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be

original letter and should be addressed to: Neil Pack, Group Manager
(Information, Research & Customer Planning) Resources Directorate,

can email [1][email address]

the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a
decision. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at: Information
Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire,
