Subject: Freedom of Information request - Policy documents - Common Purpose
The Mayor would like to thank you for your interest in his work and he is keen to answer your query as fully as possible. As you will appreciate, he has received a very large amount of correspondence from Londoners since the election and it is proving quite challenging to respond as quickly as we would like.
Please note that non Greater London Authority (GLA) related queries will be referred to the appropriate functional body for them to reply e.g. transport related queries will be referred to Transport for London (TfL).
However, the Mayor is committed to responding to all appropriate correspondence and everything is being done to reply to your query as quickly as possible.
This is an automated message and therefore does not require any response.
Mayor of London
Greater London Authority

Dear Mr Walker
Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FoI), which was received by the Greater London Authority (GLA) on 29 July 2008. In your request, you asked two questions, and our response to these is provided below.
1. Copies of your organisation's policy documents relating to the selection of personnel for Common Purpose training.
As mentioned previously, the GLA's Learning and Development team has not procured training from Common Purpose, and as such, there are no corporate policy documents relating specifically to the selection of personnel for Common Purpose training.
In terms of selecting personnel for courses generally, the selection criteria varies according to the aims of the course. Short courses (1 day or less) run by the learning and development department are available to all staff providing they are relevant to their current or future role and this is agreed with their line manager. Criteria for longer term initiatives varies, depending on the subject matter and who the development is most relevant to. This may be a set of specific criteria (i.e. new and middle managers), or it may be based on the quality of a delegate's response to questions about how they would benefit from and apply the learning, or a mixture of both.
I am attaching our criteria for central funding of long-term qualification based courses, which may be of interest to you, but as previously mentioned there has been no central funding for Common Purpose courses.
2. copies of ALL correspondence (email, letters, memos etc) relating to the selection of personnel for Common Purpose training.
We have located one email chain that is relevant to your request. Please find this attached. The names of GLA employees have been redacted from this email, as we consider them to be exempt from disclosure under the exemption at s.40 of the Act. More details of the exemption can be found in the attached annex.
I hope that this information is useful to you. If you are unhappy with the way the GLA has handled your request, you may complain using the GLA's comments and complaints procedure, available at http://www.london.gov.uk/gla/comments/in... .
Kind regards,
Karen Frost,
Learning and Development Officer,
