Dear Mr Bennett
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: RFI2295/1
I write in connection with your request for information dated and received
on 8th January 2010.
Your request will now be considered in accordance with the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (the Act). You will receive a response within the
statutory timescale of 20 working days as defined by the Act, subject to
the information not being exempt or containing a reference to a third
party. In some circumstances West Mercia Police may be unable to achieve
this deadline. If this is likely you will be informed and given a revised
time-scale at the earliest opportunity.
There may be a fee payable for the retrieval, collation and provision of the
information you request. If this is the case you will be informed and the 20
working day timescale will be suspended until we receive payment from you. If
you chose not to make payment then your request will remain unanswered.
Some requests may also require either full or partial transference to
another public authority in order to answer your query in the fullest
possible way. Again, you will be informed if this is the case.

Dear Mr Bennett
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: RFI 2295
I write in connection with your request for information received on 8^th
January 2010.
Please be advised that we may be able to supply information that is useful
to you, however we first require clarification of the request. For
example, we would be able to advise how many officers are currently
employed and this could be broken down by rank - the number of individuals
employed is not static and therefore we could not provide a single figure
for the whole of 2009.
Also Police officers may change job role throughout the year so again we
would not be able to provide a single figure for each job role for the
whole of 2009, but may be able to supply current figures or those for a
specific month, as shown below - produced for a previous FOI request.
1st November 2009
Police Staff
Police Officer (excluding CSO and Specials CSOs Traffic Warden
Traffic Warden)
C DIV 415 119 59 61 0
D DIV 476 143 38 55 1
E DIV 280 104 33 39 0
F DIV 407 120 64 81 0
G DIV 328 77 46 49 2
HQ 547 1363 1 0 0
Please note that all police officers have the potential to be assigned to
response duties dependant on the situation, therefore you will need to be
more specific about what information you require in this area
After receiving your reply, your request will then be considered and you
will receive the information requested within the statutory timescale of
20 working days as defined by the Freedom of Information Act 2000, subject
to the information not being exempt or containing a reference to a third
party.
However, if the requested additional information has not been received by
8^th February 2010 I will assume you no longer wish to proceed with this
request and will treat it as withdrawn.
There may be a fee payable for the retrieval, collation and provision of
the information you request. If this is the case you will be informed and
the 20 working day timescale will be suspended until we receive payment
from you. If you chose not to make a payment then your request will remain
unanswered.
Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter, please write
or telephone the Information Compliance Unit quoting the reference number
above.
Yours sincerely

Dear Miss Forest,
The clarification below has helped other forces arrive at the
information, so I hope it will assist you.
By "Response Duty" we mean officers assigned to respond to calls
from the public, presumably those on shift duties, who would attend
calls from the public, such as beat officers, police vehicle
drivers, dog officers, traffic etc. (Inspector, Sergeant, PC)
By "Administerial" we mean those officers specifically assigned to
roles that are office based, such as audit, police administrative
roles that by virue of the job, mean that they work in an office
for their tour as opposed to responding to public calls."
The categorisation of "Operational" seems to be the nearest
equivalent to our request for "Response", so this data would be
great if it could be be split by role and rank as you mention
(neighbourhood teams, CID, Custody etc).
"Operational Support" as I understand it, would be those officers
providing direct support to the operational officers (I guess
control room operators would fit into this?) If you could provide
the roles and ranks for these, we can build the picture.
"Organisational & Organisational Support" would seem therefore to
be the non operational side of policing, and as such are the
nearest equivalent to what we termed "Administrative". If you could
provide the police officer engaged in these roles by rank it would
be great. Please exclude any civilian staffing numbers.
Thank you so much for your help.
