Police Officer Recruitment- Financial Guidelines given to Police Forces
Peter Jones made this Freedom of Information request to Home Office
The request was successful.
From: Peter Jones
11 January 2010
Dear Sir/Madam,
Could you please provide me with any information, guidelines or
policies that cover the recruitment of potential Police Officers
who may be in financial difficulties.
I am particularly interested to ascertain whether an Individual
Voluntary Arrangement(IVA)is viewed in the same light as a
Bankruptcy.
Yours faithfully,
Peter Jones

Dear Mr Jones,
Thank you for your email enquiry which I have received via the Corporate
and Public Affairs Unit at the National Policing Improvement Agency
(NPIA).
Policy for police recruitment lies with the NPIA, therefore I am replying
to you. Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying to you.
Eligibility criteria guidance relating to police recruitment can be
found within Home Office Circular 54/2003, via the following website link:
[1]http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/about-us/pu....
However this is shortly to be replaced by an NPIA Circular which will be
available on our webpage: [2]http://www.npia.police.uk/en/10986.htm.
For financial vetting of applicants to the police service, many
police forces treat Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVA) as they do
bankruptcy, and a period of time (usually three years) need to have passed
since settlement of the IVA for the candidate's application to be
considered. However, this would be a decision for individual forces and
you may wish to check with the force you may be interested in. Contact
details for police forces can be found via the following website link:
[3]http://www.policecouldyou.co.uk/contact....
Recruitment to the police service is managed locally within a national
application, assessment and selection framework, in line with national
guidance. Vetting decisions are made on a case by case basis and by the
force concerned.
I hope you find this helpful.
Regards, Mahmood
