Police Officer employment and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

George Gardner made this Freedom of Information request to British Transport Police

British Transport Police did not have the information requested.

From: George Gardner

21 September 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Could you please answer the following questions:

1) The number of serving British Transport Police Officers who are
currently employed with a 'long term disability' as defined by the
Disability Discrimination Act?

2) How many of those officers identified as having a long term
disability are employed in 'front line' public facing roles and how
many of those are 'desk bound' or in non public facing roles?

3) Could you supply a break down of the number of those officers
who have a long term disability into either physical or
psychological disabilities?

4) How many people were recruited as Police officers into the
British Transport Police since January 2007 who have long term
disabilities as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act?

Yours faithfully,

George Gardner

Dear Harry,

Thank you for your response.

Can you tell me who does hold the information I seek?

I am at a loss to understand how a Police Service the size of BTP
would not hold or record information concerning the health of it's
employees and the roles and environment in which they work?

I am also aware that the Metropolitan Police are able to collate
and publish such information.

Could you please confirm why BTP do not deem it necessary to hold
such information?

Yours sincerely,

George Gardner

Dear Mr Gardner,

Each police officer (or member of staff) that is recruited can at their own discretion offer to record the fact they have a disability on their application form. However this information, if provided, is not recorded centrally. Therefore in terms of the Freedom of Information Act, this information is not held.

In addition to this, to collate this information would involve looking at every officer's application form which would exceed the appropriate limit outlined in Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act, currently set at 18-hours / £450.

I'm sorry that we cannot assist you further at this time.

Kind regards,

Elliot
