Police Complaint Concerning Damian Green
P. John made this Freedom of Information request to Cabinet Office
The request was successful.
From: P. John
18 April 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
The Telegraph recently reported that following a meeting between
Sir Gus O'Donnell and Sir David Normington, "Chris Wright, the
Director of Security and Intelligence at the Cabinet Office, wrote
to Bob Quick, the Assistant Commissioner for Special Operations, to
seek a criminal investigation [into the leaks to Damian Green MP].
The letter claimed that there had been 'considerable damage to
national security already' and the 'potential for future damage is
significant'."
The CPS have dismissed the case, stating "It did not relate to
military, policing or intelligence matters. It did not expose
anyone to a risk of injury or death. Nor, in many respects, was it
highly confidential. Much of it was known to others outside the
civil service, for example, in the security industry or the Labour
Party or Parliament. Moreover, some of the information leaked
undoubtedly touched on matters of legitimate public interest, which
were reported in the press."
The Home Affairs Select Committee described the claims of damage
done as 'exaggerated'.
Please therefore disclose
- the letter of complaint concerning Damian Green MP that was
drafted by Chris Wright, Sir Gus O'Donnell, and Sir David
Normington
- the response received from the Police
Yours faithfully,
P. John
