Percentage of Recycled Waste Actually Recycled

Michael Mulqueen made this Freedom of Information request to Poole Borough Council

The request was successful.

From: Michael Mulqueen

20 September 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please could you advise me of the proportion of domestic waste that
has been put out for recycling (such as in a blue wheelie bin) that
is actually recycled (as opposed to landfilled). Please also
specify the total mass of all waste collected with the intention of
it being recycled.

Furthermore, could you please break this figure down for different
waste groups where possible (a hypothetical example: 94% of paper
is recycled).

Is all or any of the recyclable waste processed outside of the UK?
If so, please elaborate.

NB: To clarify, this email applies only to domestic waste (that has
been put out by residents with the expectation that it is recycled)
collected by, or on behalf of, the Borough of Poole.

Yours faithfully,
Michael Mulqueen

Dear Mr Mulqueen,

Poole's co-mingled recycling is collected at kerbside from domestic
properties in blue bins and taken to our transfer station at Nuffield
Road. Co-mingled recycling collected from beach litter bins, street litter
bins and from commercial properties with a co-mingled recycling collection
is also taken to this transfer station, bulked and taken to the Grosvenor
Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at Crayford in the same articulated
lorry.

Our contractor, Viridor, who operates the MRF , carries out regular
analysis of Poole's recyclate, sorting it into its constituent
materials and supplies us with details of the proportion (by weight) that
each of these materials makes up of our recyclate. This analysis also
provides details of whether each material was recycled, landfilled or sent
for incineration.

For this reason, we are unable to supply you with a breakdown of waste
collected from domestic properties only . However, I have attached
details of the average representation of each element of our recyclate and
the tonnages collected from domestic properties. From this you can
estimate the tonnage recycled, assuming of course that the rate of
contamination is consistent in domestic and trade bins. In this document I
have also indicated the usual end processors used by Grosvenor MRF
facility.

I hope that this answers your query.

Your sincerely,

Heather Clarke
Waste Management Officer
