Pedestrian crossing offset

Kaihsu Tai made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Transport

The request was successful.

From: Kaihsu Tai

Dear Madam or Sir,

I noticed that a pedestrian zebra crossing (marked by beacons or
traffic lights) in England is often set off several metres from the
actual crossing of the roads (for vehicle traffic), so that a
pedestrian walking on the pavement of one road, wishing to cross
the orthogonal road, needs to walk down the orthogonal road for
this offset length to reach and use the zebra crossing. Would you
please let me know whether such a design is prescribed in Local
Transport Notes 1/95 and/or 2/95, on pedestrian crossings?
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/tpm/tal/...
If not, please supply the official advice suggesting such a design.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Dr Kaihsu Tai
