Dear Mr Green,

Thank you for your freedom of information request which was received by
Essex County Council on the 4^th August 2010 and given reference 1719.

Please see below information which I believe satisfies your request:

Since April 1, 2009, how many redundancies have there been at Essex County
Council, and how much has this cost the council?

I can confirm that since April 1 2009 there have been 49 redundancies at
Essex County Council which have cost £631,798.87.

Please note: Essex County Council are unable to differentiate between
voluntary and compulsory redundancies so we are unable to break these
figures down further.

Essex County Council has set itself an ambitious target to deliver in
excess of £300 million by 2013/14 which continues a theme of
modernisation of the way we deliver public services. Savings will be made
through a variety of means including a thorough review of all services
which will entail a review of everything including staffing and the
proposal of innovative solutions to different ways of working. It is
inevitable that some redundancies will occur as new skills are required
and to ensure that duplication is removed from the organisation. Any
savings made through redundancy payments, which equates to overall staff
establishment reduction, will contribute to these savings/efficiency
targets and will be redirected within the organisation according to key
service priorities.

or medium. You must reuse it accurately and not in a misleading context.
The material must be acknowledged as Essex County Council copyright and

If you are not satisfied with my response to your request, please let me
know. If I am unable to resolve the issue immediately, I will explain our
complaints procedure.

If, after following our complaints procedure, you are still not satisfied,
you are entitled to ask the Information Commissioner to review our
decision. You can contact him at Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow,
Cheshire, SK9 5AF, telephone 01625 545700.
