Oxford charter 1191

Kaihsu Tai made this Freedom of Information request to Oxford City Council

The request was partially successful.

From: Kaihsu Tai

23 July 2008

Dear Madam or Sir,

May I please have a digital photograph (or an electronic file
containing a scanned image) of the 1191 charter for the city of
Oxford, with the seal? Please may I request that the image has a
resolution high enough for the text to be legible. In addition, may
I please have an English-language translation of the original
Latin-language text?

The original document and its English-language translation are held
in the Museum of Oxford, operated by your Council. However, it is
impossible for a member of the public visiting to obtain the image
I am requesting, as photography is not allowed in that Museum.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Dr Kaihsu Tai

Dear Mr. Tai,
Thank you for your enquiry. Although it is not really a
Freedom of Information matter, I have checked with Museum staff and they
are happy to provide you with a transcript of the Charter. They can also
provide an electronic image, but there will be a charge for this. Can
you tell me if you want this for media/commercial reasons or
scholarly/personal?

Yours sincerely,

Martin Hughes

Dear Martin,

I can affirm that the use is for non-commercial scholarly purposes.
Please indicate the magnitude of the charge for the image, so I can
make a decision of whether it is affordable.

Sincerely,

Dr Kaihsu Tai
