Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council

Dear Mr Oxlarge,
Thank you for your request under the Freedom Of Information Act 2000
received on 13th November. Your request has been registered centrally on
our FOI Register and allocated the reference No: DSC385.
In response, the reply from our Car Parks Department is as follows:
There is no way of calculating the amount of overpayment even if we had
dates as the machines used by this authority do not have this cpacity.
Someone might put in 90p for a 70p stay and someone else may put in £1.70
for 4 hours which is £1.50. The machines will issue a ticket for the
required time of completed payment, which means if 90p is put in then a
ticket will be issued for 1hr even though £1.00 would give you 2 hours.
This may seem unfair but the other options would only increase parking
charges if we purchased machines which gave change. The financial
implications would mean employment of more staff to ensure the machines
had adequate coins to dispense change and also increased banking costs.
All of these costs would have to be passed on meaning an increase in
parking charges.
The Car Parks Department is asked this question many times and hopes this
explanation does show that we have considered other options.
If you are not satisfied with this reply, you have the right to make a
formal complaint, in the first instance, through the Council's Complaints
Procedure which can be found on the Council's website
([1]www.crewe-nantwich.gov.uk). Should you continue to remain
dissatisfied following this course of action, you can make a further
appeal against the decision by contacting the Information Commission,
Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5AF.
