Offenders Index statistical breakdown

Kaihsu Tai made this Freedom of Information request to Criminal Records Bureau

Criminal Records Bureau did not have the information requested.

From: Kaihsu Tai

21 July 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your publication "Employing ex-offenders: A practical guide" claims
that the Home Office Offenders Index shows "that one in three men
and almost one in ten women born in 1953 had been convicted of an
offence before the age of 46."

Would you please provide

1 How one could find the details of this piece of statistics from
the Offenders Index; and

2 How one could find the itemized breakdown by the type of offences
in this piece of statistics.

Sincerely,

Dr Kaihsu Tai

Dear Dr Tai

Thank you for your enquiry.

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) is an Executive Agency of the Home
Office. The CRB provides access to criminal record information to
employers, voluntary and licensing organisations for recruitment and
licensing purposes.

The CRB does not hold a copy of the Police National Computer (PNC) record
of convictions. The system held by the CRB is known as a PNC Extract. The
extract contains basic identifying details such as name and date of birth
of persons included on the PNC. The extract does not contain any
conviction information. The Police both own and maintain the PNC.

The CRB do not hold the information you refer to. 'Employing Ex-Offenders
- A Practical Guide' was not drafted by the CRB. This document was drafted
by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

You may wish to forward your request directly to CIPD. I have provided
their contact details below:
