Number plates

Simon Sayes made this Freedom of Information request to Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

The request was successful.

From: Simon Sayes

24 March 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have noted at several DVLA press releases regarding the sale of
registration marks and at auctions people holding number plates
which say at the bottom DVLA SA6 7JL.

As I cannot find the DVLA as a registered supplier on its own
database I would like to know how these plates are obtained as the
law clearly states that the plate should show the details of the
registered supplier at the bottom.

It also states that anyone supplying to an unregistered supplier is
breaking the law.

This would suggest that DVLA is breaking its on legislation and
encouraging others to aid and abet it in this offence

Yours faithfully,

Simon Sayes

Dear Sir

Thank you for your request for information regarding the use of number
plates in our PR communications.

I don't consider this enquiry to be covered by the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 and my response is on a business-as-usual basis.

I can confirm that we use a registered number plate supplier to
manufacture the plates we use. We obtain permission from the DVLA Press
office to have these plates manufactured for use in our PR campaigns.

Dear DVLA PERSONALISED REGISTRATIONS,

thankyou for replying however I do not feel your response satisfies
my request.

Your form v796 states a nunmber plate must display the name and
post code of the supplying outlet. This is also on your form v940 to
apply as a registered number plate supplier

I repeat as the plates you display say DVLA SA6 7JL I take it this
implies you are a number plate supplier as per your form.

Again you do not apear on your own register and as such would
appear to be breaking your own legislation.

If you are stating that you are exempt from your own legislation I
would request via FOI all documentation which you have relating to
this advice and decision

Yours sincerely,

Simon Sayes

Dear Sir or Madam,

futher to my last message I have now seen a picture in the attached
link which does not appear to show any suppliers name or post code
on plates which I assume you have supplied, which again I believe
is an offence.

Could you please provide an explanation for this?

Yours sincerely,

Dear Sir

Thank you for your further e-mail of 26 March.

To the best of my knowledeg, the DVLA are not exempt from the legisation
to which you refer. Your enquiry is therefore not covered by the Freedom
of Information Act.

You clearly beleiev you have a complaint. May I suggest that you put your
complaint in writting to the Agency. Details of how to do this are
available on the DVLA website at
www.dvla.gov.uk/contactus/if_things_go_w...
