Dear Sir or Madam,
You state on your website that your products Land-Line and 1:50,000
Scale Colour Raster contain detailed information on the location of
Post Boxes. Please could you tell me
How many Post Boxes location points are identified within these
products
How accurate the location of these post boxes is (resolution) and
whether the level accuracy is uniform across all the post box
locations
If the post boxes are labeled with any identifier which is
recognised by the Royal Mail
Yours faithfully,
Julian Burgess

Dear Julian,
Request for information
Ordnance Survey reference: 68703
Thank you for your email dated 15 July 2008 requesting; "You state on your
website that your products Land-Line and 1:50,000 Scale Colour Raster
contain detailed information on the location of Post Boxes. Please could
you tell me:
1) How many Post Boxes location points are identified within
these Products?
2) How accurate the location of these post boxes is
(resolution) and whether the level accuracy is uniform across all the post
box locations?
3) If the post boxes are labelled with any identifier which is
recognised by the Royal Mail?"
I am pleased to provide you with the attached information with regard to
your request.
1) There are currently 668,430 common points of detail with
the same map feature code as Royal Mail post boxes. Of these points, Royal
Mail post boxes are annotated by the letters 'LB'(for Letter Box)
within our large scale database, now OS MasterMap and not Land-Line. As
this information is reasonably accessible to you by other means by
using our Point X product, even though accessible only on payment, this
part of your request is exempt under section 21 (2) (a) for the
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
We do not show post boxes in our 1:50,000 Scale Colour Raster
product.
2) Accuracy statements for OS MasterMap can be found at:
[1]http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsit...
3) The identifier is that created by Ordnance Survey as stated
in our specification:
[2]http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsit...
and
[3]http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsit...
Please note that your enquiry has been processed to Freedom of Information
guidelines. To the extent that the public interest (section 17) applies,
we have determined that in all the circumstances of the case, the public
interest has been met with the full provision of all information in this
instance.
If you are unhappy with our response, you may raise an appeal to our
Appeals Officer at:

Please include the reference number above. The Appeals Officer will ensure
that the process has been followed correctly, questioning any decisions
taken regarding the original response and recommending disclosure of
additional information if appropriate.
Thank you for your enquiry.
