Dear Irfan Ahmed
Thank you for your request dated 16 September 2009 which is shown below.
The House of Commons holds the information you have asked for and I can confirm that Mr Prentice funds the salaries of three members of staff from his Staffing allowance. However, your request for how much they are paid is refused. Details of individual staff salaries are exempt by virtue of section 40 (2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the exemption for personal information), as disclosure of this information to the public generally, in the House's view, would not be consistent with data protection principles in the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA). This is an absolute exemption and the public interest test does not apply. This is consistent with decisions reached by the Information Commissioner, for example:
http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/d...
Further information on disclosing salary details can be found on the Information Commissioner's website:
http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/l...
General information concerning salary scales of staff employed by Members of Parliament and description of duties can be found on http://www.w4mp.org/html/library/salarie...
You may, if dissatisfied with the treatment of your request, ask the House of Commons to conduct an internal review of this decision. Requests for internal review should be addressed to: Freedom of Information Officer, Department of Resources, House of Commons London SW1 OAA or [House of Commons request email]. Please ensure that you specify the nature of your complaint and any arguments or points that you wish to make.
If you remain dissatisfied, you may appeal to the Information Commissioner at Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.
