Dear Lynn Daley,

Many thanks for your Freedom of Information enquiry received by Essex
County Council on 25^th July 2009.

In the request you asked for details on the number of electively home
educated children and young people in Essex. I am pleased to enclose the
information you requested below.

1. Number of electively home educated children known to your LA in
academic year 2008-09.

Although we do not collect specific information on Home Educated pupils,
we do know that 1051 children were `known' to be home educated in 08/09.

2. Number of electively home educated children who have a protection plan
in place due to neglect or abuse.

Unfortunately we do not hold any information on Home Educated pupils with
a protection plan.

3. Total number of all children in your LA.

There are currently 192,386 pupils in Essex.

4. Total number of children who have a protection plan in place due to
neglect or abuse.

There are 385 children on a protection plan due to neglect and abuse.

Dear Your Right To Know,

I am confused. You say:

"Although we do not collect specific information on Home Educated
pupils, we do know that 1051 children were 'known' to be home
educated in 08/09."

However, only those registered at a school are pupils, so are you
talking about EOTAS rather than electively home educated which I
asked for?

Yours sincerely,

Lynn Daley

Dear Mrs. Lynn Daley.

Thank you for your query dated 20^th August 2009. I can confirm that the
figures for question one are for electively home educated children and not
those incorporated in the EOTAS scheme.

Hopefully this answers your question but if however you have any further
queries please feel free to contact me.

Many thanks,

Scott Sammons

Tania Berlow left an annotation ( 4 March 2010)

this number is entirely wrong.
In the supplemental questionnaire there were 733 EHE registered, in a seperate FOI for suitable education there were 472.

of course, no matter if data is wrong......policy is only being made on this data
