Number of and total power consumption of advertising displays
Jon Carter made this Freedom of Information request to Transport for London
The request was partially successful.

Dear Transport for London,
Please could you supply details of the number of electronic
LCD/plasma flat screen advertising displays in use across the Tube
network, their total power consumption, and the amount of CO2 this
generates annually, in excess of using paper advertising displays.
Please also supply any projections for estimated CO2 savings you
hope to achieve by shutting down escalators at non-peak times, or
if information is available, the actual savings achieved.
Yours faithfully,
Jon Carter

[FOI #25276 email]
Dear Mr Carter
Thank you for your email received by London Underground. You asked for
information about the number of and total power consumption of advertising
displays
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act and I can confirm that we do hold the information you
require.
Please find below the calculation for C02 omissions for LCDs and DEPs
provided by our contactor CBS Outdoor (CBSO), who have detailed the full
calculation.
These power figures are from the manufacturer’s specifications and are
based on the assumption of full power, however CBSO do not operate at this
level constantly.
DEP (Plasma/Flat screens)
1278 DEPs
- Each DEP is rated 0.16 kw
-To convert kw to kw/h multiply by 18 hours (based on 6am till midnight
operation) = 2.88 kw/h used per dep per day
-Multiply the 2.88 kw/h by 1278 units = 3681 kw/h used for all deps each
day
-To get kw/h per year multiply the 3681 kw/h by 365 days = 1,343,434 kw/h
used per year
-To get the C02 footprint you’d multiply the 1,343,434 by a conversion
factor of 0.52
= 698,585 kg c02 per year
-Finally, divide the 698,585kg by 1000 to get Tonnes = 698 Tonnes CO2
emitted per year (1278 DEPs switched on for 18hrs per day)
LCD
225 LCDs
-Each LCD rated 0.65 kw
-0.65kw x 18 hours = 11.7 kw/h per day for 1 LCD
-11.7 kw/h x 225 LCDs = 2,633 kw/h per day for all LCDs
-2,633 kw/h x 365days = 960,863 kw/h per year
-Multiply the 960,863 by the co2 conversion factor (0.52) to get:-
-499,649 kg C02 per year
-Finally divide the 499,649 kg by 1000 to get Tonnes = 499 Tonnes C02
emitted per year (225 LCDs switched on 18 hrs per day)
We cannot provide a like for like comparison for paper advertising
displays. Calculating the C02 from paper is different and not a like for
like comparison (the C02 conversion factor differs based on what type of
fossil fuel has been used for the energy source-for digital I used the
standard 0.52 conversion factor for electricity consumption). With paper
you’d have to do a lifecycle analysis and account for co2 emitted in
the various stages such as milling, transport, printing, delivery from
printer to CBSO etc.
I am also attaching a link to our website which provide our environmetal
and carbon foot print reports which I hope you will find useful.
