Workpermits, Freedom of Information

Attachment Actuary search.xls

Dear Mr Coker,

Thank you for your email of 19 May 2008 in which you have requested
statistical information on the Work Permit arrangements for the UK. This
has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I regret to tell you that the UK Border Agency does not hold all of the
information you have requested subject to the provisions of the Act. We
have provided information relating to the first part of your question.
However, the data you have requested in the second part of your question
is not routinely produced by the UK Border Agency and the FOI Act does
not require us to create information in order to answer a request.

In order to produce the information you have requested it would be
necessary to create new data which would involve the creation of
formulas and cross tabulation, running of reports, exporting the data to
Microsoft Excel, applying a 'rounding' formula and the formatting of the
data for presentation purposes.

Please see attached list of the relevant job titles with numbers of
'live' work permits. Please note that with some of the job titles it is
difficult to tell if the job is equivalent to an "Actuarial Analyst" or
"Actuarial Student".

This information is provisional management information and may be
subject to change. The data are not national statistics.

The Work Permit arrangements are designed to help employers who need to
recruit personnel from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) where no
suitable resident worker is available. EEA Nationals (except those from
Bulgaria and Romania who are subject to employment restrictions) are
allowed to move and work freely within the EEA, and do not require
permits.
Please note, Work Permits are issued to people who enter the country to
take work, whereas "First Permission" refers to those who are already in
the country but do not hold a work permit when their application to work
is approved. The data represents applications for Work Permit approval
letters from individual companies. The applicants may not take up these
jobs and therefore may not have arrived in the relevant area.

I hope this information is of help to you. If you are dissatisfied with
this response you may request an independent internal review of our
handling of your request. Internal review requests should be submitted
within two months of the UK Border Agency sending a substantive reply to
your original request and should be addressed to:

Information Access Policy Team
UK Border Agency
11th floor, short corridor
40 Wellesley Road
Croydon
CR9 2BY

During the independent review, the department's handling of your
information request will be reassessed by staff who were not involved in
providing you with this response.

Should you remain dissatisfied after this internal review, you will have
a right of complaint to the Information Commissioner as established by
section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act.

Yours sincerely

Freedom of Information Team
