2) How many unique hits with a *.wikipedia.* referrer your website
received per month, for the year 01/06/08-31/06/09

The Gallery does not collect this information and so is unable to answer
this question.

3) How many unique hits with a *.wikipedia.* referrer your online gallery
received per month, for the year 01/06/08-31/06/09

The Gallery does not collect this information and so is unable to answer
this question.

4) How many *.wikipedia.* referred hits to your website resulted in a
conversion to purchase a print for the year 01/06/08-31/06/09

The Gallery does not collect this information and so is unable to answer
this question.

5) How many hits to your website resulted in a conversion to purchase a
print for the year 01/06/08-31/06/09

The Gallery sold 3,827 Portrait Prints via the Gallery website during this
thirteen month period.  We also sold another 584 prints within the same
period via the Rights & Images section, however, you should note that
print orders received in this way may be initiated online but frequently
require offline research, new photography and digitisation before they can
be fulfilled.

6) The gross revenue gained specifically from *.wikipedia.* conversions to
online print purchase for the year 01/06/08-31/06/09

The Gallery does not collect this information and so is unable to answer
this question.

8) The cost to you per print purchased via your website - i.e. running
costs of the website, including system administration, web design, etc

The Gallery does not hold this information.

9) Average profit or loss per print purchased via your website

The Gallery does not hold this information; it records gross profit on
each order, but these are usually a mix of various products.

10) The net revenue gained in any way via your website per whole calendar
month for the last year (calendar or financial)

The Gallery does not hold this information as we record gross rather than
net revenue.  Also, we are not able in every instance to identify revenue
gained via our website as many transactions that start online result in
sales via other means.

11) The net revenue from tickets sold within the museum per whole calendar
month for the last year (calendar or financial)

Entry to the Gallery is free, however tickets are sold for admission to
some special exhibitions.  The Gallery has not calculated net revenue
figures but the gross figures for special exhibition tickets sold within
the Gallery per calendar month for the last financial year are:

Month                          £

Jan 09                  335,110

Feb 09                  23,046

Mar 09                  149,109

This revenue is used to offset the cost of the exhibition programme, as
reported in the Annual Report and Accounts 2008-9, which are currently in
preparation and will be published shortly on our website at:
[1]http://www.npg.org.uk/about/corporate/ac....

12) The net revenue gained from the cafe(s) that operate within the museum
per whole calendar month for the last year (calendar or financial)

The Portrait Café and Restaurant are franchised to an external agency and
the Gallery does not hold net revenue figures per calendar month.
However, in 2008-09 the Gallery received an annual turnover commission of
£250,263 and an annual rent of £103,600.

13) The gross income of the National Portrait Gallery, including all
business units that fall under it for the last year (calendar or
financial) - i.e. the website, cafes, etc

website at: [2]http://www.npg.org.uk/about/corporate/ac....

which are currently in preparation and will be published shortly on our
website at: [4]http://www.npg.org.uk/about/corporate/ac....

16) The yearly salary of whomever handles digital rights licensing for use
of online gallery images on other websites

A number of individuals in different areas of the Gallery are involved in
preparing images for licensing.  However, licensing itself is carried out
by any member of the Rights & Images team.  This team is also responsible
for a range of other activities (see 17 below).  The total cost figure
for the Rights & Images team in 2008-9 was £219,000.

17) What other tasks this person or persons perform for the national
portrait gallery

The members of the Rights & Images team handle a wide range of duties
which may be summarised as follows:

o Promote and increase the availability of Gallery images to the widest
possible audience while ensuring that income and rights are protected
o Researching the collection on behalf of existing and potential
customers

o Copyright management, including advising clients, Gallery colleagues
and members of the public; negotiating permissions, agency agreements
and rights assignments; licensing; payment and receipt of royalties
o Processing orders and payments for prints, transparencies or other
media for editorial, commercial and private use
o Licensing for editorial and commercial use in broadcasting,
traditional print media, electronic products and merchandising

against the Wikimedia Foundation (including but not limited to solicitors
feeds, paid-hours spent by NPG staff working on the legal case, etc)
broken down by year, covering the past 5 years (calendar or financial)

While some costs have been incurred in seeking legal advice, amounting to
about £3,900, the Gallery has incurred no costs to date in pursuing legal
action against the Wikimedia Foundation.

Under the terms of the Act, I am required to inform you of our appeals
procedure in case you are not satisfied with this response. A copy of our
public leaflet on Freedom of Information, which advises you how to appeal
to the Gallery and of your right to appeal to the Information
Commissioner, can be found on the Gallery website at:

Yours sincerely

Robin Francis

It seems a little unconventional not to collect/analyse referrer information, no?

It does seem unconventional not to collect the referrer information.

You could just try asking for the log file. I got one from OFSTED:

http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/we...

They redacted the REFERER field, but maybe NPG won't.
