Dear Ms Scott
In answer to your Freedom of Information request about the level of no strings donations to the University of Edinburgh, I am happy to provide the following data:
2002/03 579,291
2003/04 617,089
2004/05 1,195,876
2005/06 720,528
2006/07 3,636,417
2007/08 799,097
There are number of clarifications that it will be useful for you to know. The University financial year runs from August 1st to July 31st, so this data is structured in that way.
The expression 'no strings' I have interpreted as, what we call, unrestricted donations, i.e. those donations which can be used for any purpose and which are directed by the University of Edinburgh Development Trust to the area of greatest financial need, for example scholarships and bursaries.
Also, there are other types of income that could have been included in this income stream, but which I believe are not relevant to your request. These are interest received from these donations in the time that are in bank between the donation date and their use, dividend income, tax recoverable against the donations (Gift Aid) and so on.
Lastly, the 2008/09 figure has not yet had audit clearance so can only be considered draft.
I hope that this is satisfactory, but please don't hesitate to contact me if you have further questions.
Regards,
Alex Hyde-Parker
