Sheila Gibb made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Work and Pensions

Dear Sir or Madam,
Persons on benefit receive assistance with their mortgage payments.
Since 2001 many persons have had to endure the "endowment debacle"
which has effectively led to 1in3 households re-financing their
mortgages for another 25 years as they had been making interest
only repayments on their home loans.
In the last economic downturn (1990) many persons took the
governments advice of seeking employment overseas. Since then these
persons have been "distance consumers" of the UK finance industry
and due to the introduction of money laundering regulations cannot
employ a lawyer from overseas to seek redress. The finance industry
is mercilessly exploiting this situation and consumers have been
offered a pittance in compensation thus ensuring chronic shortfalls
to the advantage of finance organisations.
Did the DWP assist persons on benefit with endowment mortgages to
get adequate compensation (reducing their chronic endowment
mortgage shortfall) and thus reduce the government's on-going
commitments re mortgage interest payments?
In essence citizens now wonder if it would have been more prudent
to remain in the UK and on benefits for the last 10-15 years as
opposed to seeking employment overseas.
And can the department clarify HOW MANY recipients of mortgage
payments are receiving assistance with endowment payments where
these remain a part of the condition of their mortgage agreement.
Yours faithfully,
Sheila Gibb

Dear Sir or Madam,
Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of
Information reviews.
I am writing to request an internal review of Department for Work
and Pensions handling of my FOI request 'Intervention re chronic
endowment shortfall(s)'.
Taxpayers would be appalled to know the DWP was paying mortgage
interest for benefit recipients until they die due to the criminal
behaviour of the UK finance system / endowment sector. If there
have been 1,000,000 persons claiming benefit for the period
1997-2007 then DWP would have been negligent if it did not seek to
minimise chronic endowment shortfalls of a substantial portion of
the above figure.
A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is
available on the Internet at this address:
