Nevin made this Freedom of Information request to Foreign and Commonwealth Office
The request was partially successful.

Dear Foreign and Commonwealth Office,
The British Embassy website in the USA formerly carried the logo
'Britain in the USA'; it is now 'UK in the USA'.
When was the 'Britain in the USA' website established, when was the
change made to 'UK in the USA' and why?
Yours faithfully,
Nevin

Dear Nevin,
In answer to your question of 5 March, the majority of British Embassy and
British High Commission websites were re-branded as `UK in (country name)'
in 2008 as part of the re-launch of the FCO's web platform. The change to
the web domains was intended to provide a simplified and more consistent
naming convention for our websites.
The British Embassy website was formerly called Britainusa.com, and was
established in 1996. It switched to UK in the USA in September 2008.
Kind regards,
Graham

Dear Graham Harradine,
Thanks very much for this reply. The rebranding also brings greater
clarity as many people would not associate Northern Ireland with
the 'Britain' label.
You say majority. Which EU states, if any, have not been rebranded
'UKin(countryname)' and why?
Yours sincerely,
Nevin

Dear Nevin
The website was previously called Britainusa.com (Not Britain in the
USA.)
It was originally established (as Britainusa.com) in 1996.
It switched over to UK in the USA in September 2008 in line with the
naming convention of our other country website
