From: AJ Lyons
6 March 2010
Dear British Transport Police,
Can you please supply me with the following information in relation
to serving Police Officers and membership of the Volunteer Reserve
Forces, ie Territorial Army, Royal Navy Reserve, Royal Marines
Reserve and the Royal Auxilary Air Force:
1) How many / what percentage of currently serving BTP
Officers are members of the volunteer reserves? If possible please
break down numbers for each reserve force.
2) Of these, how many have been mobilised for operational tours
within the past 5 years?
3) What is you force policy on membership of the volunteer
reserves, ie do officers have to have passed their probabtion
period, is there a maximum number / percentage of officers that can
be nembers of the volunteer reserve at one time, is any additional
support made available to them such as paid time off as per the
insructions given in Home Office Circulars? Please supply a copy of
the policy.
4) Notwithstanding the answer to Q3, is membership of the reserve
forces a bar to employment either as a Police officer a) as a new
joiner or b) as a re-joiner / transferee or c) for internal
transfers between areas and/or specialist posts?
5) Is BTP registered with SABRE (www.sabre.mod.uk) as a
supportive employer, if not are there any plans to do so?
Yours faithfully,
Miss TR Harrington

Dear Miss Harrington
In respect of your request dated 6^th March 2010, please accept my
apologies on behalf of British Transport Police for the delay in
responding.
British Transport Police can only supply part of the data requested as to
comply fully with this request would exceed the Appropriate Limit of 18
hours work. The reason for this is BTP have only recorded this data
centrally for the last 12 months. To ascertain the full data you have
requested would require the examination of some 4000+ records to see what
data is held. Therefore in accordance with Section 12 of the Freedom of
Information Act BTP are not obliged with your request. However, some data
is available which BTP are prepared to supply.
In respect of your request:

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 3 officers, Royal Navy Reserve 1
officer, Territorial Army 3 officers

This information is not available at present.

British Transport Police do not hold the document you have requested
Notwithstanding the answer to Q3, is membership of the reserve forces a

re-joiner / transferee or c) for internal transfers between areas and/or
specialist posts?
Membership of the reserve forces is not necessarily a bar to employment as
a police officer. We would not stop an application if an applicant was a
member of the Reservists. It is the Chief Officer's discretion whether
they can remain volunteers once appointed by BTP.
Is BTP registered with SABRE (www.sabre.mod.uk) as a supportive employer,
if not are there any plans to do so?
BTP is registered with SABRE.
