Dear Ms Houghton,

A request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 is a request for
'recorded information' held by the public authority to which the request
is made. Your request appears to be for a definition of a term, which
doesn't fall within the concept of 'recorded information'. However, if
you can give me an idea of the context I may be able to assist. Is this
a term you have come across on our website or in one of our documents?

Yours sincerely

Dear Sue Broughton,

Many Thanks for responding. The term is referred to on your website
within Planning and Historic Landscapes, however there is no
documentation or information available on your website to indicate
what the Council deems this term to mean.
If you are unable to supply any documentation or information on
this term under FOI then please can you forward this request on to
someone who can advise me of the definition?

Yours sincerely,

E.Houghton

Dear Ms Houghton

A quick search has found a link to PPG15: Planning and the Historic
Environment, which is published on the Communities and Local Government
website and linked from this webpage on our site:
http://www.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?a...

I cannot immediately locate a document or webpage called 'Planning and
Historic Landscapes' Is it the PPG you are referring to or something
else? If it isn't this, could you supply the document or page reference.
I can then check who created the page or document and refer this
directly to them or their service.

However, I have found one reference to reorganised fields as a field
type on the GIS maps under Historic Landscape Characterisation
http://www.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?a... (it's on the HLC
Current Types North Wessex Downs AONB and West Berkshire). Is this the
reference you are seeking? The project looks to be using a standardised
vocabulary provided by English Heritage as a descriptor for field
systems and other landscape features. If this is the reference I will
check with our Archaeology Service for the EH descriptor definition.

Yours sincerely

Dear Sue Broughton,

Yes the reference was on the West Berks online map with Historic
Landscape selected. Please could you try to locate the definition
from your archaeological Department?

Yours sincerely,

E.Houghton

Dear Ms Houghton,

I passed your enquiry to my colleague Sarah Orr and her response is
given below.

Dear Emily
Your request has been passed onto the archaeology service of West
Berkshire Council. I presume you have come across the term reorganised
field through reading somewhere about our Historic Landscape
Characterisation Project - see
http://www.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?a.... This was a
project sponsored by English Heritage and other partners to analyse
current and past land-uses, and 'reorganised fields' was one of about 70
classifications which were identified and mapped for the district. We
hope to have the glossary and full report available on-line very
shortly, but for now I am sending you a table of types which gives
summary explanations of the names, broad groups they fall into,
approximate periods of use and a brief description. In this you will
see that reorganised fields are defined as 'Modern fields formed through
the consolidation of existing, historic, enclosures into more regular
holdings, usually to enable more efficient, mechanised arable
agriculture. These are different to Amalgamated Fields (also sometimes
called 'prairie fields') as they are formed not simply through boundary
removal.' They are a 20th century type of enclosure, and are very
common across West Berkshire and the North Wessex Downs Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty - see orangey colour on this pdf map -
http://www.westberks.gov.uk/CHttpHandler....

Please get back in touch with me directly if you need more information,
either about the project or a specific area in West Berkshire where
you're interested in its landscape evolution.

Best wishes
