Dear Sir or Madam,
Writing in MoneyMarketing, Lee Jones [27-Feb-2009] says:
"Good guys bailing out the bad - This week building societies
revealed their 2008 profits have taken major hits thanks to their
proportionately huge FSCS levies.
Skipton revealed its profits were slashed by a half thanks to a
£16.3m FSCS levy and Norwich & Peterborough too saw its profits
slashed thanks to its £5.5m levy.
Britannia was hit with a levy of nearly £20m, Welsh mutual
Principality saw a third of its profits go in a £5.2m charge and
Leeds also took a hit of £9.7m.
There are more results to come, and with them more profit
reductions as the prudent mutuals help pay for the misdemeanours of
likes of the cavalier demutual, Bradford & Bingley."
It is important that the marital status of those in arrears with
mortgage payments is established, because if it is cohabiting,
ex-cohabiting or separated couples who are substantially
responsible, the lending policies of mortgage lenders should be
reviewed.
Yours sincerely,
Nick Gulliford
