Mapping data available under Freedom of Information requests
Georgia Dryden made this Freedom of Information request to Ordnance Survey
Ordnance Survey did not have the information requested.
From: Georgia Dryden
3 July 2008
Dear Sir or Madam,
Please could you tell me what data I could obtain from the Ordnance
Survey under a Freedom of Information request?
I am aware that the data is used to generate maps that are for
sale, but if possible, I would like, in electronic format, that
underlying data that goes to create the maps.
For example, if you had (and it must be held by the OS) the grid
locations for every mains pylon in the country. (If you do have
this information, could you supply this to me within this request.)
If I can't obtain any data from the OS, could you outline the
reasons why this data isn't available.
Yours faithfully,
From: Georgia Dryden

Dear Sir or Madam,
I refer to my initial FoI request of 3rd July, which is now
overdue. Under the Freedom of Information Act you should have
replied by now, and are breaking the law.
I also understand it was an odd request, and if you needed more
time, merely saying this anytime within the legal twenty days would
have sufficed.
Please can you deal with this now out-of-date request immediately.
I look forward to hearing from you presently
Yours sincerely,
From: Tony Gray

Dear Georgia
We have checked our systems and there appears to be no record of any
written request from you under Freedom of Information. We have also
checked our normal enquiries process and again nothing is recorded.
If you can provide me with the details; who it was addressed to, when
sent, what you requested, and if you received an immediate acknowledgement
(which will contain a 5 figure reference number starting 6....), I will
look into your enquiry with the utmost urgency.
I apologise for any inconvenience to you regarding this matter and I look
forward to hearing from you shortly
Yours sincerely
Tony Gray

Dear Georgia

Thank you for your email dated 15 August 2008 requesting: `Please could

I can confirm that Ordnance Survey does hold this information, however I
regret to inform you that your request falls within the Information
accessible to applicant by other means exemption under section 21 (2) (a)
of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). We believe this exemption
applies because the information requested (including that stated as an
example) is available as part of the OS MasterMap(R) Topographic layer
which is available under licence from Ordnance Survey via our online
service. More information is available on our web site at:
[1]http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsit...
, therefore we will not be releasing this information to you.
Please note that your enquiry has been processed to Freedom of Information
guidelines. To the extent that the public interest (section 17) applies,
we have determined that in all the circumstances of the case, the public
interest has been met as the requested information is accessible by other
means in this instance.
Please note that your enquiry has been processed to Freedom of Information
guidelines. If you are unhappy with our response, you may raise an appeal
to our Appeals Officer at:
Customer Service Centre
Ordnance Survey
Romsey Road
SOUTHAMPTON
SO16 4GU
Please include the reference number above. The Appeals Officer will ensure
that the process has been followed correctly, questioning any decisions
taken regarding the original response and recommending disclosure of
additional information if appropriate.
Thank you for your enquiry.
Your sincerely
