Lost and found identity documents

Dr. Geraint Bevan made this Freedom of Information request to Home Office

The request was partially successful.

From: Dr. Geraint Bevan

7 July 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

I understand that the Identity & Passport Service have advised
police forces that lost passports should be returned to IPS rather
than returned to the passport holder.

Please tell me whether the police have been issued with any
guidelines for the handling of a) biometric visas for foreign
nationals, and b) national ID cards, or whether any such guidance
is planned.

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Geraint Bevan

Dear HQ Enquiries,

thank you for your response and the information about guidance that
has been issued to police forces about passports, and that which is
likely to be issued about UK identity cards.

By "biometric vias", I was indeed referring to the plastic cards
now issued in place of vignettes to foreign nationals entering the
UK. I assume that this is what you are referring to by "UK issued
foreign national identity cards" and trust that the UKBA will be
able to answer my query.

thanks,

Dr. Geraint Bevan
