Dear Electoral Commission,
Not sure if you are the correct body to ask this if not please
inform of who I should ask.
Please inform me of what the law is on local government employees
standing as candidates in local council elections of the same
council they are employed by.
Yours faithfully,
T. Morgan

Electoral Commission

Dear Sir or Madam
In response to your question, a person cannot be a candidate at a local election in England or Wales if at the time of their nomination or their election they are employed by the local authority, or hold a paid office under the authority (including joint boards or committees). This is covered in Section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972. The full range of disqualifications at local government elections is complex and we always advise candidates to consult the relevant legislation to ensure that none of the disqualifications apply to them and, if in doubt, we always recommend they seek their own legal advice.
I trust this answers your question.
Yours faithfully
