I am writing to request information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.
(i) Please can you provide me with a list of zoos owned by local
authorities.
(ii) Please can you provide me with a list of zoos owned by public
authorities other than local authorities (if any)
The purpose of my inquiry is to compile a list of zoos that are
subject to the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Dear Mr Cross
Thank you for your e-mail of 7 June requesting a list of zoos owned by
local authorities. I have attached a list of the local authority owned
zoos in England. The licensing of Local Authority zoos in Wales,
Scotland and Northern Ireland is a matter for their respective
administrations.
A number of zoos listed are exempt from zoo licensing requirements so
while they meet the definition of a zoo under the Zoo Licensing Act
1981, they have been given an exemption under section 14(1)(a) of that
Act.
Zoos owned by other public bodies, apart from Local Authorities, are
licensed by the relevant Local Authority. The Department does not keep
a list of zoos owned by other public bodies.
