List of publicly owned companies
A Freedom of Information request to Companies House by John Cross
Companies House did not have the information requested.
John Cross
7 April 2008
Dear Sir or Madam,
Please can you provide me with a list of companies which are known
by Companies House to be publicly-owned companies. If Companies
House already has a list of what it regards to be publicly-owned
companies than I happy simply to receive a copy of that list.
If however you require a definition of "publicly-owned company" to
comply with my request then I define a 'publicly-owned company' to
be one for which all members fall into one or more of the following
categories:
(i) Ministers
(ii) government departments
(iii) public authorities
(iv) companies wholly owned by the Crown
(v) persons acting on behalf of any of (i)-(iii), above.
If you require further clarification please let me know.
Yours faithfully,
John Cross

Dear Mr Cross
With reference to your email dated 7 April 2008 regarding your request for a list of companies which are known by Companies House to be publicly-owned companies.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide the specific information you have requested as we do not hold the information in that format. Companies House holds records of private limited and public limited (PLC) companies. Each of these companies will have directors and we are legally required to hold information regarding these officers. However, we are not required to hold anything other than their name, address, date of birth, occupation etc and so it is not possible to interrogate our systems to identify the categories that you have mentioned.
I am sorry that we have been unable to provide you with this information.
Yours sincerely
Mrs J Lumsden
