Dear Mr Room
Thank you for your email dated 11 March 2009 requesting a list of banks, financial companies and other bodies who come under the jurisdiction of the Financial Services Agency (FSA).
Because your enquiry is a broad request for data, as oppose to a request for an individual firms details from the FSA Register of authorised firms, I have passed your correspondence to our data extract team who will contact you with further details about their service.
The FSA Register of authorised firms
I can confirm that you are able to find details about firms that are authorised and regulated by us on our online Register of authorised firms. Alternatively, if you do not have easy access to the internet, you can call our Consumer Helpline on 0845 606 1234 (call rates may vary) between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday.
You can access the FSA Register online at the following website address:

The Customer Contact Centre - how we can help

Dear Consumer Queries,
Whilst I appreciate that all the companies who come under the FSA's
jurisdiction can be accessed through the search facility you sent
me, I really need a list of names not the ability to look them up
individually. Since such a list must exist, can I not just be sent
that list to examine?
Yours sincerely,
Clive Room

Good morning Clive,
Thank you for your email. The Register Extract Service forms part of the
FSA's Publication Scheme, where you can subscribe to either 'Firms' data
or 'Firms and Individuals' data, details of which are below:
Firm Data (all the files are in FSA Reference Number order)
1. Authorisation file, 2. Permitted Activity file, 3. Alternative Name
file, 4. Appointments, 5. Products file, 6. Sub Status Codes file.
Individuals Data (all the files are in Individual Reference Number
order).
1. Individuals file, 2. Controlled Function file, 3. Appointment
Employment file.
I have attached a sample file which shows the data in its raw form (this
has been sent in Excel but please note the files are normally sent as
text files), and the Subscribers Handbook (which gives details of the
categories and activity descriptions). The order form shows the prices
for weekly and monthly updates, as well as single copies of the data. It
also shows that you can subscribe to the information via FSA (the data
is on CDs or cartridges) or via SDM (the data is via internet
downloads).
The FSA cannot provide tailored lists, but these are accessible through
SDM (http://www.sdm-fsa-register.co.uk/). You will need to provide the
definition of what you require e.g. if you wanted a list of mortgage
brokers in the North West of England, you will need to provide the
postcodes you consider to be North West and the codes in the handbook
that define a mortgage broker.
How it works - information is sent to purchasers (via SDM / FSA) about
the firms/individuals on our register either for single copies, weekly
updates, or monthly updates. Purchasers then use this information for
either 'Other: own business' (marketing), 'FSA Compliance: own business'
(compliance), or 'Commercial Re-use' purposes (reselling the data to
other parties).
Please note that the extract does not include email addresses or
information on Third Money Laundering registered firms. If we can be of
any more help, please email [email address]
Kind regards,
Joel Williamson

Dear Mr Room
Thank you for your email dated 13 March.
I believe that our data extract team have already e-mailed you regarding your previous request.
As you can appreciate, our resources are finite, and as such we ensure these resources are focused on meeting the requirements of the Financial Services and Markets Act (2000). We are required by law to maintain a list of firms that have fallen (or have fallen) under our remit, and this is publicly available. Where we receive a request outside the normal use of the FSA Register, this is dealt with by the data extract team, and they may charge a fee for this service.
