It is very important that these questions are answered completely, to refuse or hide the answers behind any excuse would lead public to think there were some conflict of interest or some form of incentive given to have these Lords to manipulate discussions.

Dear Mr Maybin

Thank you for your e-mail of 14 March.

Please treat this e-mail as confirmation that the Department has received
it, as is dealing with it accordingly. I would be grateful if you could
include the above reference number in any future correspondence on this
request.

In respect of your fourth question, I would be grateful for some
clarification from you as to exactly which companies, groups or
individuals opposing the interception of communications for the
purposes of customising Internet advertising you are referring to.
Ministers meet a great many companies, groups and individuals many of
which can cover a wide variety of subject matters, agendas and
viewpoints.

Knowing this would greatly aid the search for material that could be
within the terms of the request.

Yours sincerely

Patrick Balchin

Dear Patrick,

Thanks for the response. The organisations and individuals I had in
mind were:
The World Wide Web Consortium W3C (Sir Tim Berners Lee);
Foundation for Information Policy Research (Nicholas Bohm, Richard
Clayton);
Open Rights Group (Jim Killock, Becky Hogge);
No2ID;
Liberty;
plus any others who may have talked to the minister about targeted
advertising using communications interception.

As far as I am aware the minister has not met anyone from NoDPI
(Alexander Hanff), Badphorm (Jim Murray) or Dephormation (Peter
John).

Yours sincerely,

Neil Maybin
