Information on gap year company 'Frontier'

Joshua Carroll made this Freedom of Information request to University of Nottingham

The request was successful.

From: Joshua Carroll

21 January 2010

Dear University of Nottingham,

In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would be
grateful for details of the University's dealings - if any - with
the following companies:

The Society for Environmental Exploration (Operating as 'Frontier')

Frontier Ltd (sister company to the above)

The former company sells overseas volunteer projects to gap year
and university students, the latter company provides marketing
services to the former.

I would like to know of any correspondence between either of
companies and the University of Nottingham and if possible I would
like to read it. I would also like to know if any representatives
from Frontier have visited the university to speak at any public
events such as conferences, careers fairs etc or if there are any
plans for this to happen.

I would also be very grateful if you could find out whether or not
the university has any kind of business relationship with Frontier.
In particular, does the university facilitate marketing and
advertising for Frontier, (for example, posters, advertisements in
emails or letters to students, links on websites etc.)

I would be very grateful for your help

Yours faithfully,

Joshua Carroll

Dear Mr Carroll,

Further to your request for information relating to the gap year company Frontier, we need some additional details in order to provide the information you have asked for. You ask for "any correspondence between either of companies and the University of Nottingham". This is extremely broad and we would appreciate it if you could narrow this down, for example by advising what content you are interested in, or communications between a specific department within the University and Frontier. Unfortunately it will not be possible to comply with this part of your request without this additional information.

We will respond to your request within twenty working days from the date of receiving the additional information requested.

I hope that this is of help. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any enquiries regarding this email.

Yours sincerely,
Sam Kingston

Dear BR-Freedom-of-Information,

Well Frontier are a gap year and student travel company, so it is
most likely that they would have been in contact with your careers
department in order to make arrangements for attending careers
fairs and public talks. If they are advertising through the
university then I imagine your accounts department would have some
record of them (I am not sure if the university has a 'marketing'
or 'advertising' department). Finally it is possible that the
admissions department may deal with them on some level since I seem
to recall being sent literature about gap year companies when I was
applying/accepting my place at university.

The company also conducts marine life scuba diving and so-called
'eco-tourism' trips, so it is possible the department of biology
and life sciences have had correspondence with them.

To summarise, your efforts would best be spent focused on the
following departments:

Careers
Accounts/Finance
Advertising (if applicable)
Under Graduate Admissions
Biology/life sciences/ any department with a specific interest in
plant and animal life.

I hope these criteria are sufficiently narrow for you; if there are
any more problems, please don't hesitate to contact me immediately.

Yours sincerely,

Joshua Carroll
