Joshua Carroll made this Freedom of Information request to University of Kent
The request was successful.
From: Joshua Carroll
22 January 2010
Dear University of Kent,
In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would be
grateful for details of the University's dealings - if any - with
the following companies:
The Society for Environmental Exploration (Operating as 'Frontier')
Frontier Ltd (sister company to the above)
The former company sells overseas volunteer projects to gap year
and university students, the latter company provides marketing
services to the former.
I would like to know of any correspondence between either of the
companies and the university and if possible I would like to read
it. I would also like to know if any representatives from Frontier
have visited the university to speak at any public events such as
conferences, careers fairs etc or if there are any plans for this
to happen.
I would also be very grateful if you could find out whether or not
the university has any kind of business relationship with Frontier.
In particular, does the university facilitate marketing and
advertising for Frontier, (for example, posters, advertisements in
emails or letters to students, links on websites etc.)
I would be very grateful for your help
Yours faithfully,
Joshua Carroll

Dear Mr Carroll
With reference to your recent request under the Freedom of Information Act please see below for our response:
1. Details of the University's dealings - if any - with the following companies: The Society for Environmental Exploration (Operating as 'Frontier'); Frontier Ltd (sister company to the above)
The University of Kent's Careers Advisory Service advertises the services this company offers to students. Several academic schools (Biosciences, Anthropology, Psychology) receive posters and brochures which are displayed or circulated to students.
2. I would like to know of any correspondence between either of the companies and the university and if possible I would like to read it.
Correspondence between the Careers Advisory Service and Frontier has been by telephone or email and no records of email correspondence have been kept.
Please find attached a copy of correspondence between a member of University of Kent staff in an academic school and a member of Frontier staff regarding a talk given at the University of Kent on 21 February 2007 (Frontier Conservation Careers Talk).
Please find attached a further copy of correspondence between a member of University of Kent staff and a member of Frontier staff (Frontier Introduction).
3. I would also like to know if any representatives from Frontier have visited the university to speak at any public events such as conferences, careers fairs etc. or if there are any plans for this to happen.
The Frontier Organisation first visited the University's Careers Advisory Service on 21 February 2007 to give a presentation to students on Careers in Conservation. This presentation was repeated on 7 February 2008. Frontier also attended a Careers Fair at the University of Kent in 2008 and in 2009.
4. I would also be very grateful if you could find out whether or not the university has any kind of business relationship with Frontier. In particular, does the university facilitate marketing and advertising for Frontier (for example, posters, advertisements in emails or letters to students, links on websites etc.)
The Careers Advisory Service deals with Frontier as a company advertising Gap Year opportunities to undergraduate students. Details of what they offer is brought to the attention of students via the usual ways that the Careers Advisory Service advertises vacancies (poster, email, web addresses). A charge was made for Frontier's attendance at the Careers Fairs (£120.00 for each visit) but there are no other financial arrangements in place.
Please find attached references to Frontier as they appear on the Careers Advisory Service website.
Yours sincerely
