John Cross made this Freedom of Information request to Independent Monitoring Boards Secretariat
The request was successful.
From: John Cross
6 June 2009
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to request information from the Independent Monitoring
Boards Secretariat under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The
purpose of my request is to create a list of email addresses of the
independent monitoring boards that can be used for Freedom of
Information Act requests.
Your website suggests that:
"If your Freedom of Information request relates to a specific IMB,
please contact the Board directly via the prison or immigration
removal centre to which it is attached."
Please could you therefore provide me the contact email address for
each Independent Monitoring Board.
I have made a similar request in the past that was rejected however
a document has been brought to my attention that suggests this may
no longer be the case.
"A generic ‘Chair’ email account has now been set up for you.
Please find your individual logon details, including a username and
password enclosed. You will need to activate this email account in
order to begin creating further accounts for your Board."
http://www.imb.gov.uk/docs/DC_07-09_Secu...
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. Thank you
also for setting up email accounts that can be disclosed to the
public.
Yours faithfully,
John Cross

Dear Sirs
Please could you respond to my Freedom of Information Act request.
It would appear that your response is overdue.

Dear Mr Cross
It is true that secure email addresses have been set up for Independent
Monitoring Board Chairs. However, it requires that Board Chairs have to
sign up to the conditions attached to the address and then have to
establish a password to enable them to log into their email accounts.
Not all Board Chairs have done this so the list of Chairs having an
email address is far from complete. This is an ongoing project.
Yours faithfully

Dear Mr Kilbey,
Thank you for your email. If some email addresses were operational
at the date I made my request then at least some of the addresses
created should be released. Please continue processing my request
by releasing all information held that falls within the scope of my
original request.
Yours sincerely,
John Cross

Dear Mr Cross
At the time of your initial request no Board Chairs were signed up to
the secure email system. However, I am able to inform you that the
generic addresses are as follows:
chair.(name of prison)@imb(name of prison).cjsm.net
e.g. [email address]
You will wish to be aware that this is a criminal justice secure mail
(cjsm) address and can only be accessed from a cjsm or government secure
intranet (gsi) site.
Yours sincerely

Dear Mr Kilbey,
Please could you provide a list of all the email address that have
been issued to the IMBs whether or not they are currently in use.
If you do not consider this to fall within the scope of my previous
request then please view this as a new request under the Freedom of
Information Act.
Yours sincerely,
John Cross

Dear Mr Cross
I believe I answered your question in my email of 14 July. However, I
will confirm that the email address of IMBs in prisons is:
chair.(name of prison)@imb(name of prison).cjsm.net
You will wish to be aware that there is no name attached to the Chair.
Yours sincerely

that request was rejected but circumstances have changed, they now have non-personal email addresses so I expect the information to be provided.
Many thanks to Richard Taylor for pointing out the circular about the new email addresses.
