Dear West Berkshire Council,
i) Who are the incumbent suppliers of the "basic connectivity" for
your Wide Area Network Services? Are any contracts due for renewal
in the next six months?
ii) How many sites on your network require high speed (greater than
1Gig) connections?
iii) Do you integrate (or manage) your own network or do you use a
Systems Integrator or Outsourcing company for your network or ICT
services? If so, please specify who and when the contract expires.
iv) How many Data Centres do you use and are they on council
premises or third party premises? If third party please specify the
company and when the contract expires.
v) Do you use "Co-location" Services ? If yes who is the supplier
and when do the contracts need to be renewed?
Yours faithfully,
Joe Hellard

Dear Mr Hellard,
We have now collated the information to respond to your request. You
have asked;
i) Who are the incumbent suppliers of the "basic connectivity" for your
Wide Area Network Services? Are any contracts due for renewal in the
next six months?
Redstone Managed Services are the suppliers of the majority of the
Council's WAN. Redstone are one of the few approved suppliers agreed
through the South East Grid for Learning (SEGfL) consortium for
provision of ICT Services to Schools. The rest of the WAN links are
provided by direct contracts with BT. The Redstone contract is reviewed
every three years (see iii below) and most BT circuits are also normally
signed on a 3 year basis.
ii) How many sites on your network require high speed (greater than
1Gig) connections?
We have only one connection between two sites that requires
greater than 1Gb.
iii) Do you integrate (or manage) your own network or do you use a
Systems Integrator or Outsourcing company for your network or ICT
services? If so, please specify who and when the contract expires.
The majority of our WAN (that provided by Redstone) is monitored
and maintained by Redstone. The rest of the network is managed and
maintained by Council ICT staff. The Redstone contract expires in April
2010.
iv) How many Data Centres do you use and are they on council
premises or third party premises? If third party please specify the
company and when the contract expires.
We currently have two data centres which are both on Council
premises.
v) Do you use "Co-location" Services ? If yes who is the supplier
and when do the contracts need to be renewed?
No.
If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you may
ask for an internal review. You should contact David Lowe, Policy &
Scrutiny Manager, Policy & Communication, Council Offices, Market
Street, Newbury RG14 5LD, email [email address] if you wish to
request a review. If you are not content with the outcome of the
internal review, you have the right to apply directly to the Information
Commissioner for a decision. The Information Commissioner can be
contacted at:
Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow,
Cheshire SK9 5AF
If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me.
