Hydroelectric scheme for Chadkirk

Sheila Oliver (Account suspended) made this Freedom of Information request to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

The request was successful.

From: Sheila Oliver (Account suspended)

31 January 2010

Dear Stockport Borough Council,

As I understand it, lowland water power schemes can, at optimum
operation, only produce 1kWh per day per person. How much is the
proposed Chadkirk hydroelectric scheme likely to cost the council
taxpayer? I am all for sustainable energy generation and reducing
energy wastage, but am not for schemes that are possibly expensive
and won't deliver much power generation.

Yours faithfully,

Sheila Oliver

Dear Mrs Oliver,

I am writing in response to your request for information below (ref 2627).

The proposed Hydro Electric Scheme at Otterspool would generate 45kW. Over
the course of a year it would produce approximately 189,000kWh, enough
carbon neutral electricity to meet the needs of 47 households. Altogether
small scale hydro power has been estimated to be able to meet 3% of the
UK's energy needs as part of a mixture of renewable generation that is
needed to meet the international climate change targets.

It will not be funded by the council taxpayer, although some officer time
will have been involved in enabling the scheme to go ahead. If the scheme
does go ahead will be funded by a community owned company, and will return
its profit after interest and running costs into a trust fund to enable
other environmental projects local to Stockport.

If you are unhappy with the way we have handled your request you are
entitled to ask for an internal review. Any internal review will be
carried out by a senior member of staff who was not involved with your
