How many cases of Children being taken from parent/Guardian following maliciously reported false allegations of neglect or abuse have been identified by Department for Children, Schools and Families in the whole of the UK.

Peter Burke made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Children, Schools and Families

The request was partially successful.

From: Peter Burke

19 October 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

How many cases of Children being taken from parent/Guardian
following maliciously reported false allegations of neglect or
abuse have been identified by Department for Children, Schools and
Families in the whole of the UK.

What is the usual procedure recommended by Department for Children,
Schools and Families to local authority Children's Services for
this kind of scenario when social workers make these kind of
mistakes ?

Also has any compensation been paid to families for this sort of
mistake and the trauma and disruption it would cause to a family?

Yours faithfully,

Peter Burke

Department for Children, Schools and Families

9 December 2009

Dear Mr Burke,
Thank you for your email of 19 October 2009 in which you ask for some
specific information on the reporting of allegations of abuse.

In relation to your question about the number of children that may have
been removed from the care of their parent or Guardian following an
enquiry into an allegation of abuse, I can tell you that this information
is not held by this Department. You may, however, be able to obtain the
information by contacting local authorities directly. Likewise this
Department does not hold information on the number of cases that have
resulted in compensation being paid.
In answer to your second question about making a complaint against local
social services I should explain that this Department cannot intervene in
individual cases, these are considered best dealt with locally where all
of the circumstances are known. Under the provisions of the Children Act
1989, each local authority is required to set up a complaints procedure.
This procedure, which must contain an independent element, considers
complaints and other representations made by children, parents and others
with a legitimate interest in the child in relation to the local
authority's discharge of its functions.
Yours sincerely,

Barbara-Nsdu Black
