Subject: RE: Freedom of Information request - How do the PCT deal with retiring GP's who continue to practice.
Dear Mr Kumar
Thank you for your email dated 18 May 2008 requesting information under the Freedom of Information Act.
Please see below the information/advice which our primary care contracting team have provided. As noted the PCT does not hold this information and it is suggested that you request it from FHS (Family Health Services) who are an organisation who manages the registration of independent contractors, like GP's, dentists and pharmacists on behalf of local PCTs. There are based at Becketts House 2-14 Ilford Hill, Ilford, Essex IG1 2QX.
FHS manage the Performer List for GPs and therefore they have this information.
FHS will be able to identify from the Exeter system the number of retirements since 2004.
With regards to the second part of Mr Kumar's question, there was an ambiguity around retiring GPs and inclusion on performer lists. Initially we asked all GPs to retire and re-apply for inclusion on the performer list. Later clarification was provided by the Department of Health that GPs did not need to resign from the performer list and could remain on the list to undertake locum work.
I also need to inform you that it is our policy to publish a summary of all requests for information made under the Freedom of Information Act and subsequent responses on our website on an annual basis.
yours sincerely
Tansy
