11 July 2008

Dear Mr Kumar

Re: GP Retirement

Further to your email of 18 June 2008, I apologise that your original
request for information of 18 May 2008 was not acknowledged.

Regarding your question concerning how Leicester City PCT deals with
retiring GP's who continue to practice, prior to 2004 General
Practitioners had to leave the GP Medical List and apply for
re-inclusion if they wished to continue to provide NHS services within a
PCT area.

Since the introduction of the Performer's List and recent changes to in
Pension arrangements the requirement is now that GPs are allowed to
undergo a 24 hours retirement and a General Practitioner must restrict
his work within the first month for no more than 16 hours a week. Due
to this the GP must confirm with the PCT of this arrangement. Under the
new arrangements for performer's lists the Trust is no longer required
to remove their name from the list.

Since 2004 a total number of 19 GPs have retired in this way. However,
only 12 of these GPs continue to work within our area.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours Sincerely

Chris Lawson
