Dear Sir or Madam,
I would like to request the following information under the Freedom
of Information Act 2000:
Why aren't all recyclable plastic materials collected? For example,
some plastic containers are rejected by the collection teams
despite being clearly marked as recyclable.
I look forward to hearing your response within 20 working days.
Yours faithfully,
Steve Bird

Apologies for the delay in responding. Please see below response to this
enquiry;
"There are many different types of plastic used in containers and
packaging. Some of these are; you can recycle 'where possible'.
We have a secure contract which enables us to recycle the types of plastic
found in plastic bottles, ensuring 100% recycling in the UK.
To be able to collect mixed recycling, the materials would need to be
sorted as not all types of plastic can be recycled together. Sorting
plastic is very labour intensive and therefore expensive. As the cost
rises the collection service becomes less viable and more cost would be
passed to the tax payer. To Implement a new material in to the recycling
service, we must have secure markets to ensure the on-sale of materials.
Currently, the markets which deal with mixed plastics are in the Far East
and are not stable.
