Hospital beds available in event of civil emergencies

David Stringer made this Freedom of Information request to Department of Health

The request was successful.

From: David Stringer

24 October 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am seeking information related to emergency preparedness
planning.

In evidence to the House of Commons defence select committee on
Oct. 21, Lord West was asked how many hospital beds in the U.K.
could be made available in the event of a civil "emergency in the
order of 10,000 deaths."

Lord West said that the Department of Health "would know" the
number of beds available.

Under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act, please can you:

a) supply all relevant information held on the number of beds
across the U.K. which would be available in the event of an a major
catastrophic incident, as defined by The NHS Emergency Planning
Guidance 2005.

b) if the cost of answering is not disproportionate, provide a
breakdown of those available beds by Primary Care Trust area.

Yours faithfully,

David Stringer
