HOSB Taser Database Reports

HMP Britain made this Freedom of Information request to Home Office

The request was successful.

From: HMP Britain

17 February 2010

Dear Home Office,

In a response to a previous Freedom of Information Act request
(your reference #CR12997) it was stated:

"We therefore propose to advise ‘HMP Britain’ that, although we
cannot provide the full Taser “dataset” because it would exceed the
cost limit to do so, we would be happy to create a number of
specific reports to produce the figures and statistics that they
are interested in."

The Home Office releases quarterly Taser statistics. Each incident
is split by police force and Taser method used (red dot, drawn,
aimed, arced, etc.)

I would like to know the following information from the Taser
Database:

1. Could I have a similar report to the quarterly statistics; could
I have report whereby each incident is split by actual age of
target at the time of incident and Taser method used. (this should
exclude estimates)

2. Same as above, including estimated age.

3. A report whereby each incident is split by 'Officer Defined
Ethnicity' and Taser Method Used.

Yours faithfully,

HMP Britain

HMP Britain left an annotation ( 1 May 2010)

Information was sought on the age of people who were Tasered by the police in England & Wales. Information was also sought on the ethnicity of Taser subjects.

The data is held on a central database held by the Home Office and contains every use of the Taser electroshock weapon in England & Wales. In an internal review in a separate request, the Home Office offered to generate these reports from the database but not release the actual dataset itself.

The report reveals that the Taser was used 223 times against children aged 13 - 17 from July 2007 and December 2009 (this figure includes 'red dotted' with laser sight, drawn, fired etc).

3 children aged 14 were shot and electrocuted with the device.

Children aged 13 - 17 make up 4% of those electrocuted by the police.
