Dear Mr Dewsbury

Thank you for your freedom of information request about homelessness. The
request has been sent to me to respond to and I apologise for the delay in
responding to you. I have assumed that the questions you raise relate to
the homelessness service in Manchester. I will take each of your questions
in turn.

The number of people registered as homeless in 2008

By this I am assuming you mean the number of people accepted as homeless by
Manchester City Council in 2008 - ie the number to whom the local authority
has a statutory duty. This figure is 581.

Total amount of funds allocated to any cause related to homelessness across
all departments in the Council in 2008

By this I am assuming you mean how much it costs the City Council to
discharge its statutory duty to homeless people. Homelessness services are
funded from a variety of sources. The discharge of homelessness duty is a
statutory duty and is therefore paid for by the General Fund. In 2008 it
cost the City Council £1.6m to discharge its statutory duty. Clearly there
are other services provided to homeless people but these are covered
through the Supporting People programme, housing benefit and a grant that
the City Council get from central government. These services are provided
within the funding streams made available to the council and therefore
there are no costs from the provision of these services to the City
Council.

I hope this answers your enquiry and once again apologise for the delay in
responding. If you require further information please do not hesitate to
contact me.

Yours sincerely
