HM Government response to the withholding of Royal Assent

Gavin Whenman made this Freedom of Information request to Cabinet Office

The request was refused by Cabinet Office.

From: Gavin Whenman

22 November 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

My Freedom of Information request relates to the monarch's
theoretical power to withhold the Royal Assent to any parliamentary
bill that has completed all its stages through the House of Commons
and the House of Lords.

a. Does the Cabinet Office or Cabinet Secretary hold any documents
relating to HM Government's plans should the monarch withhold his
or her assent to a government bill?

b. Does the Cabinet Office or Cabinet Secretary hold any documents
relating to HM Government's plans should the monarch withhold his
or her assent to any other parliamentary bill?

c. If such documents exist, could the Cabinet Office or Cabinet
Secretary please release them into the public domain for debate and
consultation.

Yours faithfully,

Gavin Whenman

Dr K J Hamer left an annotation ( 3 January 2009)

Ditto to this one - how could it possibly take more than three days to give you information on Government policy to withholding of Royal assent. An internal review should ask them to justify this.

Rather than an internal review, I've submitted separate requests for each of the last 12 years.

Splitting them into 12 different requests may not help you with regards to costs, they can aggregate your separate requests to calculate the total amount. You may have been better off just asking for info from the last 1 or 2 years
